Phobia

We all have things that make us shudder; who doesn't watch 'I'm a celebrity' without cringing at the creepy crawlies! But a phobia is quite different. It is a persistent fear where the sufferer will go to great lengths to avoid the thing that creates the phobia. Often, phobias are categorised as irrational as the length the person goes to to avoid it is disproportionate to the actual danger posed.

Tackling Phobias

So imagine the first time you see a spider you see one of your parent's scream their head off. This is stored in your brain and so, the next time you see a spider and the same thing happens it becomes stronger. Soon it is you who is screaming at the spider and the phobia template becomes hard wired in the brain, becoming stronger and stronger each and every time you repeat the behaviour. The phobia, once created, is stored in the brain in the hippocampus where all of our behavioural templates are stored. Of course, the origin of some phobias are hard to trace but regardless of how they got there, phobia's can be incredibly debilitating.

Some phobias are strange; Arachibutyrophobia is a fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. Jangelaphobia is a fear of jelly. A recent client of mine had a phobia of eyes and was feeling very upset at the thought of having to wear her glasses on her wedding day because the thought of putting in a contact lens made her feel ill!

Thankfully there is an easy way to remove the phobia template and in just 4 sessions of hypnotherapy the fear that has been haunting you for years can be gone for good! Getting rid of a phobia is life changing for many and the impact can be widespread. A client of mine recently came to see me for a flying phobia; she was travelling to Australia to visit her daughter who was travelling the world and the thought of flying made her ill. Being able to get excited for her holiday for the first time ever not only made her happy but also affected her partner and children who were overjoyed to share the excitement with her. And Carly with the eye phobia yesterday told me that she had just got some contact lenses from the optician and will be wearing them for her wedding in June. Not only that but she thinks she will now be wearing them everyday from now on!
